Museum Island Berlin

Museum Island Berlin

Berlin | Germany

Project duration: 2024-2026

Commissioned by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing, the IHM developed a management plan for the UNESCO World Heritage property Museum Island Berlin in consultation with relevant stakeholder groups. Museum Island Berlin has been inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1999 under criteria (ii) and (iv). It illustrates the development of the modern museum over a period of 100 years.

To develop an adequate management plan, the IHM applied the latest UNESCO requirements. This included identifying the site’s value-bearing attributes based on an analysis of the OUV and its criteria, multiple site visits, and expert consultations. Drawing from significance and vulnerability assessments, as well as an analysis of the existing management system and planning tools, the priorities for the next management cycle were subsequently defined. Strategic objectives were defined during a phase of intensive participation. The management plan also includes implementation strategies and measures, as well as action plans and a monitoring and quality assurance system. This enables the effective steering and support of the site’s management and ensures the preservation and appropriate development of Museum Island as a UNESCO World Heritage property.
