Monastic Island Reichenau

Monastic Island Reichenau

Island Reichenau | Germany

Project duration: 2020-2021

In 2020, the IHM was commissioned by the Baden-Württemberg State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments at the Stuttgart Regional Council to conduct an attribute mapping study for the UNESCO World Heritage property of the Monastic Island Reichenau. Reichenau Island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 under criteria (iii), (iv), and (vi) of the World Heritage Convention.

The attribute mapping first documented the current state of the existing value-constituting attributes of the World Heritage property. The identification of significant sightlines and the designation of particularly vulnerable areas were intended to enable the client, in the event of conflicts of use, to make informed decisions that prioritize the site’s heritage conservation objectives. In consultation with the client, recommendations were ultimately made for subsequent measures to ensure the long-term preservation of the monument.
